Art for Good! We love the sense of community we have gained through doing markets and wanted to expand that love by doing something for not only the creatives in our space, but for a purpose as well. The Curators:Marisol Rendón works as artist, designer and educator. She received her MFA from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California in 2003.&nbsp; During the last 12 years, she and her husband Ingram Ober have collaborated on projects in public art, museum exhibitions, social/civic events and have participated in art and aesthetics discussions.&nbsp; They are currently working on two public art commissions for the City of San Diego at the Bayside Fire Station and Southcrest Trails Park and have a completed project at Mira Costa College, San Elijo campus.&nbsp; Besides her creative practice, she works for the San Diego Community College District as a tenured professor and coordinator of Mixed Media Three-Dimensional Design and Art program at Southwestern College.&nbsp; As an individual artist she has exhibited in countries such as France, Switzerland, Colombia, the United Kingdom and the United States.&nbsp; In California,&nbsp;she has exhibited with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido and worked closely with the New Children’s Museum, San Diego on different exhibitions and programs such as Mass Creativity and the Innovator’s Lab artist in residence.&nbsp; Marisol has presented as a guest lecturer at the San Diego Museum of Art, Mira Costa College, the College Art Association (CAA), UCLA, and the Sur Biennial at Cerritos College.&nbsp; Currently she is part of a research group and lecturer for the master’s program MAIA (Maestría en Artes Integradas con el Ambiente) offered by Cauca University in Colombia and also serves as a member of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee for the Port of San Diego and is a member of the Artist Advisory Committee for the New Children’s Museum in San Diego.Alia Kircher is an artist who specializes in printmaking, mixed media, and sculpting. Her work focuses on self-expression and femininity, using art to explore and communicate personal identity. In addition to her own creative projects, Alia is involved in content creation and flyer design for her local flea market. She is deeply passionate about working with and for her community, believing in the power of art to connect and inspire those around her.Adrian Reyes is an artist working primarily with different forms of printmaking. His work focuses on themes of culture, identity, and emotion. Beyond his personal projects Adrian is a designer for the flea market he co-hosts with Alia Kircher, as well as a designer and printer for his and Alia’s online shop. Adrian has a love for his community and has been involved in and hosted various events raising funds and awareness for various aid groups and nonprofits.

Social Impact: We are producing this art contest and exhibition in support of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.borderangels.org/about-us.html">Border Angels</a>, which is a great nonprofit! They are actively providing humanitarian aid along the San Diego/Tijuana border.<img This portrait depicts Jane from the film Paris Texas which I feel like shows her sense of loneliness, longing and fragile beauty. The piece reflects the movies haunting atmospheric vibe and her confusing blend of strength and sorrow 

Paris Texas 

Stained glass portrait of a cat reaching into a fish bowl. Clear glass was used in the largest open space to create the opportunity to change the setting and image of water. In this image I used the sky as the view in which we would perceive water. It’s my little take on how refraction of water can reflect images that aren’t directly behind the surface we see. 

Quick Dip 

I created these pieces using ballpoint pen. Each piece examines the way we perceive ourselves and our mortality. The body is simply our vessel, which will eventually decay and bloom into new life.

This piece explores the merging of self and environment, revealing how perception blurs the line between what we are and what surrounds us. The figure, half-emerging and half-absorbed into the tree, represents the shifting lens through which reality is seen. The tangled lines mirror the intertwining of thoughts, roots, and time, suggesting that perception is never static, it grows, erodes, and reforms like living wood.

The theme of this painting  plays on the idea that we might lack attention span and focus when our body feels overstimulated. Overstimulation is a product of our environment, our emotions, our thoughts, and/or our lives. The hands represent grasping for comfort and security. The balloons represent different emotions we might feel. It’s hard to focus when your emotions take control.

This work aims to capture my visions as fronteriza in my coming and going, the sunsets and the warmth that the border can be despite its complex geopolitical context. Instead of a desolate desert or an image of the crude reality of the region, I capture what is familiar. The sun and moon rising and setting at the same time, the beautiful sunsets and a 30ft steel wall painted with sayings and visions of freedom, hopeful resistance and friendship across borders.

Carrie from the film Carrie like the kill bill painting tried to capture a moment from the film in which it shows her with no emotion despite being tortured by her classmates Carrie is a very complex character

In my final moments, where will I be? Will I be sleeping and disappear, will I be sick and lain to rest with my loved ones around me, will I perish with a lover who connects with me, mind and soul? My heart longs for company. This art piece is mine, last known whereabouts: displayed at the Museum of Us at Balboa Park. 

Who Am I

Perception of the experience/lens of depression. When the world is so happy and beautiful around them, yet they feel this existential dread caving in on them. “Why is everyone so happy but I’m so sad?”

This piece reinterprets the ancient motif of the “Three Wise Monkeys” to question how perception shapes truth. Each face embodies fragmented awareness—seeing, hearing, and speaking, caught between concealment and revelation. The repeated imagery suggests not wisdom but distortion: when our senses are filtered, reality turns subjective, looping back upon itself. Echoes of Silence reflects how perception can both protect and confine us, blurring the line between ignorance and self-preservation.

Searching for Refigua

This is how I percived the light of God upon me when I was lost in my resentful, angry, deeply saddened, full of anxiety and overthinking, sinful, dark hole of despair. As dramatic as that sounds, was as dramatic as it felt in that period of my life going through an isolating, toxic, codependent relationship of almost 4 years. 
It brings me great joy to know that it is in that state that Jesus still chose to love me, regardless of how hurtful and ugly that relationship had twisted my whole being into. 
I now percieve life through the lense of how Jesus shows us the truth, and it is very uncomfortable and deeply vulnerable process, but necessary to truly be set free.
If His light and truth didn't shine on me, I would have still been in the same state of dispare without progress of genuine healing. I wouldn't have the ability to see what road I'm walking on, because a foundation of truth and healing wouldn't have been exposed to me. I have been set free and now know who has me, who chooses me even when I make mistakes, and who will continue walking with me with deep patience in this continuous journey with Him. 
Thank you Jesus for changing my life.

You choose... Me? 

My partner & I were at the Botanic Garden and I was so in awe of the shadows and the way they danced in the breeze. It made me think of the concept of 𝘬𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘣𝘪, sunlight filtering through the trees. There’s harmony between light and darkness and of that is beauty.

Funny enough I ended up spending the rest of our walk with my head down— chasing the shadows on the pavement. It soon got me thinking— what if I made an arrangement and solely relied on its shadow? What if I took away color, texture, dimension? Could I still make something beautiful? Could I still preserve an arrangements spirit and energy?
