Guusje Sanders Curator, Mingei International Museum“Jon Savage’s use of sign language to embody the art of the everyday recognizes sign language as both ordinary and profound. Highlighting that communication itself is an artistic medium rooted in lived experiences. He uses the rituals of daily life—communicating and commuting—as mediums for recontextualizing visual poetry. His approach is humorous and psychedelic as the visual language becomes fluid, gestural brushstrokes on the backdrop of something as mundane as a drive on the highway. The multichannel installation takes up your entire optical field and sucks you into a rhythm as each expression, motion, and color becomes a punctuation through repetition. Savage’s ASL Abstract&nbsp;is a kaleidoscopic trip that pulses through familiar interstate landscapes, celebrating the gestural forms of ASL through abstracted language and landscapes. ASL is an everyday language, and the poetry of the visual language is something we should be talking about more. He’s a very interesting artist.”&nbsp; Claudia James Bartlett Director, Photo L.A.“Salvage’s ASL Abstract takes us on a journey through ASL visual poetry, interwoven with iconic California imagery. As a native Californian, I settled into the familiar rhythm of the freeway drive—the passing palm trees and unfolding landscape.&nbsp;I found myself visually delighted and curious about the ASL signing across the nine sequences, wondering what was being said. I felt both included and excluded.&nbsp;John’s video allowed me to imagine what it might be like to be deaf and separated from the hearing world, while it opened up an appreciation for the beauty, poetry, and artistry of ASL, inviting me into that world.&nbsp;I’m drawn to the concept of the piece—its playfulness, its scale, its quiet confidence. Many people will question it, but they will also recognize themselves in it. He is expressing something I have rarely encountered before. John’s work expands the lexicon.“

The Curators:Marisol Rendón works as artist, designer and educator. She received her MFA from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California in 2003.&nbsp; During the last 12 years, she and her husband Ingram Ober have collaborated on projects in public art, museum exhibitions, social/civic events and have participated in art and aesthetics discussions.&nbsp; They are currently working on two public art commissions for the City of San Diego at the Bayside Fire Station and Southcrest Trails Park and have a completed project at Mira Costa College, San Elijo campus.&nbsp; Besides her creative practice, she works for the San Diego Community College District as a tenured professor and coordinator of Mixed Media Three-Dimensional Design and Art program at Southwestern College.&nbsp; As an individual artist she has exhibited in countries such as France, Switzerland, Colombia, the United Kingdom and the United States.&nbsp; In California,&nbsp;she has exhibited with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido and worked closely with the New Children’s Museum, San Diego on different exhibitions and programs such as Mass Creativity and the Innovator’s Lab artist in residence.&nbsp; Marisol has presented as a guest lecturer at the San Diego Museum of Art, Mira Costa College, the College Art Association (CAA), UCLA, and the Sur Biennial at Cerritos College.&nbsp; Currently she is part of a research group and lecturer for the master’s program MAIA (Maestría en Artes Integradas con el Ambiente) offered by Cauca University in Colombia and also serves as a member of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee for the Port of San Diego and is a member of the Artist Advisory Committee for the New Children’s Museum in San Diego.Alia Kircher is an artist who specializes in printmaking, mixed media, and sculpting. Her work focuses on self-expression and femininity, using art to explore and communicate personal identity. In addition to her own creative projects, Alia is involved in content creation and flyer design for her local flea market. She is deeply passionate about working with and for her community, believing in the power of art to connect and inspire those around her.Adrian Reyes is an artist working primarily with different forms of printmaking. His work focuses on themes of culture, identity, and emotion. Beyond his personal projects Adrian is a designer for the flea market he co-hosts with Alia Kircher, as well as a designer and printer for his and Alia’s online shop. Adrian has a love for his community and has been involved in and hosted various events raising funds and awareness for various aid groups and nonprofits.

Social Impact: We are producing this art contest and exhibition in support of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.borderangels.org/about-us.html">Border Angels</a>, which is a great nonprofit! They are actively providing humanitarian aid along the San Diego/Tijuana border.<img Steven Churchill conceived and produced <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind%27s_Eye_%28series%29">The Mind's Eye</a> series of visual music DVDs. These videos featured the best computer animation from around the globe with original scores created by notable music artists James Reynolds, Jan Hammer, Thomas Dolby, and Kerry Livgren. The second video in this series, "Beyond The Mind's Eye," reached #8 on Billboard Magazine's home video sales chart, being qualified 'Multi-Platinum' by the RIAA. Among the four Mind's Eye videos that were produced, total sales exceeded two million units. The artists received massive media exposure and also were paid royalties, based upon half the income. This topic is vast in its potential interpretations. One could think in societal, physical, political, or environmental terms. It could be a compositional or conceptual framework. We do not seek a literal illustration of the words, but rather an idea of a broader consideration of the shape we are in.

Arthur Ollman has been a photographer for 55 years. He has had more than 25 one-person exhibitions in museums and galleries world­wide. His work is held in many museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard, Cambridge, Mass. Between 1977 and 1983 he was Chairman of the Board of San Francisco Camerawork. In 1983, Ollman became the founding Director of the Museum of Photographic Arts, in San Diego, serving there for 23 years, and curating more than 100 exhibitions. He built a museum collection of more than 6,000 objects and a library of 25,000 books. He coordinated two capital expansion campaigns. He has written all or parts of 25 books and museum catalogs, and numerous articles for journals and periodicals.From 2006­‐2011 he directed The School of Art and Design at San Diego State University. In 2020 he was named Professor Emeritus at that institution. Ollman was Chairman of the Board of The Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography based in Lausanne, Paris and Minneapolis from 2013-2019.Ollman continues to photograph, curate exhibitions, and write. His recent traveling exhibitions include Vik Muniz, with the accompanying book published by DelMonico Prestel, and Hard Truths: Five Photojournalists from the New York Times.
